Bulk of correspondence is arranged in three sections. Part I, 1864-75, includes personal letters of Richmond, her parents and grandparents. Part II, 1895-1936, includes personal letters of Richmond, her children, and fan letters. Subjects include Erie Canal, boats, women, blacks, agriculture, engineering, temperance, literary work, World War I, Wellesley College, and politics. Part III, 1908-35, is business letters from her publishers, Doubleday, WOMAN'S HOME COMPANION, Reynolds & Son, LADIES HOME JOURNAL, and SUNDAY SCHOOL TIMES. Other correspondence (on deposit only) includes letters of her daughter and family, 1910-59. Also scrapbooks, diaries, clippings, household accounts, photographs, five original illustrations by Herman Pfeifer for her novel BROWN STUDY, and tapes of oral interviews of relatives and acquaintances in Fredonia, including Ruth Lambert Miller.
